This feature offers the opportunity to learn more about exhibitors’ individual style and inspirations, as well as giving an insight into their behind the scenes preparation for Bespoked 2014.

Every week we will ask a couple of different framebuilders the same five questions and along with photos of them, their workshops and the bikes they make display them on these pages.

Vidmantas “Vitas” Zukauskas

1. What defines your style as a frame builder?

I would rephrase that by asking ‘what defines our customers’ needs’. After I get an inquiry, I start with questions like what is the intent of the frame build, what inspires the client, what other bicycle parts do they like or dislike, etc. Also, I have a standard form with more than 20 questions, so basically frame design is more influenced by the customer, not me. I only make suggestions regarding frame geometry and the tube diameters to be used, or things that don’t work with each other.

However I’m really proud of my welds, finish, tube forming, integrated cable routing solution and seatmast, and my biggest mark without a doubt is that I also build custom frames with titanium lugs and bond them with carbon tubes. So overall my style is best defined with my 2 standard frames, which will be unveiled at Bespoked.  .

2. Who, or what has inspired you?

My inspiration is my background as a pro road racing cyclist and a pro cycling coach. I have ridden many bikes myself and of course with our team, and our one and only goal has always been to be number one.

3. Are you preparing anything special for Bespoked 2014?

I believe that all of our frames are special, same as the customers we are creating them for.  However we will have two really crazy projects that have never been published anywhere else before. Also at Bespoked we will unveil our first 2 standard products - the road race frame Suppresio and our cross country frame Bestia.

4. Where is your favourite place to ride?

My hometown Klaipeda (Memel), Lithuania is situated in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Curonian Spit, which has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, is just 10 minutes from my workshop by bike. This is a place where you have cycling paths along the length of the Curonian Lagoon, the Baltic Sea and through pine forests. There are small fishing villages such as Pervalka or Preila full of small family-run businesses. To come across a moose or deer riding a bike is more the norm than unusual. Moreover, cycle further for another 10 minutes and you can have the beach just to yourself and your bike. You’ll feel more like you’ve ended up in the Sahara than in Northern Europe.

5.If you weren’t a framebuilder what would you be?

I still have offers in coaching, so I believe I would go back to my roots, but hopefully it won’t happen as there are always customers in search of the best..
