1. What defines your style as a framebuilder?

Its still early days for GRIMCYCLES to really have a set style. I guess·I build modern·looking bikes with classic, proven construction techniques. I really enjoy building single speed and fixed gear bikes, simple lines and elegant silhouettes that have details you may not notice at first or second glance. I always try to add something different to the paint on each bike I create.·If I can build bikes that people appreciate and want to ride·I’m happy!

2. Who, or what, has inspired you?

Cycling has always been a defining element in my life, a passion sparked by my father and grandfather. Growing up in rural North Yorkshire in the shadow of the Pace Cycles factory, Dalby Forest and the North Yorkshire Moors naturally led me to a life long love of mountain biking. This then progressed into road and particularly track & fixed gear bikes.

I’ve always had a strong engineering and metal fabricating background, stemming from a misspent youth throwing jeeps and quads around muddy forests.·My two passions came together after seeing Ricky Feathers stunning creations, and a trip to his workshop in early 2013 led to the inspiration and conception of GRIMCYCLES.

Of course a lot of direction comes from seeing what other builders are working on. I find Instagram a really useful tool, inspirational, educational and sociable (sociable as the majority of us work alone in cold workshops all day long). It enables framebuilders across the globe to communicate with each other and see what each other·is up to.

Recently I have been taking a lot of inspiration from the motorsports industry, particularly motorbikes of the 1970’s and 80’s and this should show in some of the·bikes which will be at the show in April.··

I also love anything·related to Japanese Keirin racing·and NJS. Fixed gear is a big part of who I am, so anything to do with messenger culture and style is always an inspiration.

3. Are you preparing anything special for Bespoked 2014?

We will be showing bikes and our line of messenger bags at Bespoked 2014. In total we will be exhibiting 6 bikes - 2 cyclocross (including my brother Toby’s first design!), 3 track/fixed and we will be showing our first ever Mountain bike.

Being part of the show is a big deal for us, so we will be keeping things under wraps and showing at least 3 bikes that will have never been seen (in the flesh or photos)·by the public before!

5. If you weren’t a framebuilder, what would you be?

I’d be very depressed if I wasn’t doing this! Framebuilding is my life (much to the despair of my girlfiend!)· bikes, engineering, design, creativity and cups of tea·& biscuits, what more could you ask for?! I’ve previously worked as a messenger and as a bike mechanic so I’d probably still be doing one of those if GRIM didn’t exist, but I’d definitely be in the industry at some level.

4. Where is your favourite place to ride?

We are now based in Manchester, so a spin with mates through the busy city centre on a track bike is usually how I get my buzz! But I’m a mountain biker and Yorkshireman at heart so i love riding my old stomping grounds of Dalby Forest and riding deserted roads up on the North Yorkshire Moors. Unfortunately I don’t get to ride up there as often as I’d like!
